ABOUT CANADIAN EXOTIC GRAINS
WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO
Welcome to Canadian Exotic Grains!
By 1988 the company had begun marketing specialty crops for itself and other local farmers. The main crops being marketed at this time were lentils and canary seed.
Gary began growing test plots of various spice and pulse crops to determine if any other of the more exotic specialty crops would grow in this part of Canada. Somewhat to his surprise 10 of the 12 crops that were initially tried proved to be successful. This was a light bulb moment for Gary. He realized that there were many other crops that could be grown here but had not previously been tried.
He continued to experiment with new crop research and over the next several years he developed new crop production techniques for coriander, caraway, anise, dill seed, fenugreek, cumin, desi chickpea, kabuli chickpea, ajowan and various beans. Over the years they built up a clientele of customers from over twenty countries around the world who buy products from us on a regular basis. Growers are contracted to grow previously unknown crops that now have a steady demand.
In 1996, Gary and Susanne build a new house on their farm and then renovated their old home into office space for the expanding marketing division of the company.
In 1999, a warehouse and grain handling facility were constructed to facilitate increased volume and improved shipping capacity.
Currently, Canadian Exotic Grains employs fifteen people in the production, marketing, shipping and logistics aspects of the company. Two local processing plants as well as several other processing plants around Saskatchewan clean and bag products for the marketing operations. Many local farmers now grow exotic specialty crops on their farms near Eston.
